Having a healthy body and mind constitutes the basis of hypnotic ability. Poor health often results in diminished mental power and lowers vitality. It is important to exert a strong physical and mental influence over your subject.
Self confidence is without a doubt the hypnotists most necessary attribute. Without it, he/she will accomplish nothing. It is important to develop ones self confidence to the highest level possible. It would be wise to invest in some books or audio products that can help you achieve ultimate self confidence.
You will need determination. As a rule, most first attempts at hypnotism can lead to discouragement and it becomes far too easy to just ‘give up’.
Hypnosis is like any other skill, it will require practice, and lots of it. It is during this time that your determination will get you through.
Will power is a great attribute for the hypnotist to possess. People are easily influenced by will power. Cultivate will power and you can become an excellent hypnotist. All around us are examples of influence of will power – leaders of countries and governments, sports captains etc, all have strong will power and have the ability to influence others.
Fearlessness, or the willingness to dare without hesitation, will be another weapon in the hypnotist’s arsenal. NEVER be afraid to hypnotise your subject. They must not detect even the slightest hint of fear in your voice or body language.
The hypnotist must at all times make the subject realise, not by words, but by their manner, that he/she is absolutely fearless and in total control.
Concentration – A hypnotist must be able to fix their mind completely on one line of thought. Many hypnotists fail in their early attempts because they allow too many thoughts to flit through their minds while attempting hypnosis. An example of this would be that they start to wonder if they will actually succeed in their attempts to put the subject under, or what sort of affect it might have on them if they do succeed. Again, this is a skill that can only be learnt by practice, but it must be acquired before success can be attained.
The last attribute i want to talk about is perception – Quick powers of perception will prove invaluable for the hypnotist. To be able to instantly recognise the various characteristics of the subjects and to detect the effects his/her efforts are having upon them can be the difference between a good hypnotist and a great hypnotist. Not all subjects can be hypnotised by the same methods. Some are influenced by words and movements, others by music or monotonous sounds whilst others require passes or manipulations.
The study of human nature becomes very important in connection with hypnotism. It can be a valuable tool when choosing subjects to be hypnotised, and controlling them whilst under.
All of the above skills can easily be developed over time and the time taken to acquire them in your hypnosis training will greatly enhance your ability to become an expert hypnotist.
